If you can code something that looks cool as part of putting up your portfolio, that's definitely a good thing. Then adding some client work as you go along is also good (some clients won't let you use their application or reference it, so grab screen shots and fuzz out identifiable logo and phrases and post those along with good descriptions of the customer's need and how you exceeded it).

I coded and Designed my portfolio, but it is not up yet, I am getting it up as fast as i can. I can design pretty well considering I have had lots of experience in the graphic design area. As for coding, I can get by and I am learning at a fast rate to the point where I can code most templates that clients hand to me. I am currently teaching myself some PHP because I know I will need to know it for the future if I Plan to start charging more and actually making a hobbie out of web coding and designing.

Is true sometimes, but sometimes, is not. I got most of my clients while working at "open-source" projects. I can say it looks better if an customer sees that you did something for the community and you are not just an money man that tries to sell his soul for some bucks

In response to previous post on getting clients without much in a portfolio..
One way to get examples of your work quickly is by doing 1 or 2 freebies. I know that you are NEVER supposed to do any work for free, but this is a good way to add to your portfolio and maybe get some links, and advertising.
EX: A website was created for a local soccer league for free, but a banner was placed on the front page as a "brought to you by" type of advertisement. This site will get regular hits (sign ups, info, etc) and your work will be on display in a decent traffic area for you to show prospective clients.

Yes... coding your portfolio is fine..... If client asks you for more examples, you can provide them some free sample of your work...

I actually want to know what types of opensource scripts I should create to kick off my portfolio and display.
Are you talking something like just a Secure MySQL Class, or are you talking something such as a Newsletter Management Script?

Instead of trying to think up a new idea and hope it's impressive; it may be alot easier to simply innovate an old idea by making it more effective, smaller, and faster.
Just my 2 bits.
