It depends on many things: your inspiration, how fast the client responds, if your first design draft is good etc.
So, if I am working for one of my sites in 1-2 hours I have it done. I don't need to put too much on the design, so I just create the 'wrapper', since I can code the content afterward. For a client I need to provide a real mockup and this takes time.
We're talking few hours to even a week, if the client is 'fidgety' and can't really know what he's looking for.

It really depends. Sometimes, I can create the whole thing in only a few hours. With my most recent, and best designs, I've been designing piece by piece over the coarse of weeks sometimes.
If I design all at once I find my "designer eye" gets clouded. Coming back to a design after a day or two let's me see the design from a visitors perspective for a little bit, which helps greatly.
Attention to detail is what makes a great design, and that takes time. Don't rush your self.

The time taken to create a website design depends on its layout, content, images and animations used. If it is a simple website it can be done within a few hours; even otherwise the design should not take more than two days.

Interesting question, bbbkkK
How closely do you track your time on jobs?
Do you give your clients a timeframe when they contract you?
Do you have a standard turnaround time? I do, for one of the businesses I run. I tell clients to expect the process will be 6 weeks from signing the contract or receiving the inception payment.
If it's going to take longer because it's a more complicated job I say so up front, and am more likely to go for interim payments and the clients seem to "get it" more easily.
And, if the client needs the job in less than six weeks, I'm justified in charging a rush fee.
