Freelance Web Designer?
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could tell me what it is like being a freelance Web Designer. I am currently studying Web Media in University and I would love to become a Web Designer but I can not decide whether to freelance or not.
Thanks
Mina

Moved to general discussion.
Each comes with advantages and disadvantages
Freelancing: - You can pick projects (at times, necessity sometimes rules the day)
- You don't have a boss
- You get all the money you make
- You don't have coworkers (could be either good or bad)
- You have to spend time chasing leads and getting clients. You'll spend around half of your hours getting projects.
- There isn't much security.
Getting a "real" job (notwithstanding small companies where everyone does everything): - Stability. Companies are far less likely to suddenly go out of business or hit dry spells.
- You have coworkers (either good or bad)
- You don't have to deal with a lot of the "annoying client" crap
- You don't have a part in marketing or signing clients
- You spend far more of your time doing actual designing
It all comes down to preference. I don't particularly care for freelancing, I don't like dealing with clients or having to chase leads.

pretty much what Village Genius said. It will only boil down to your disposition. If you want to be the boss, of your time, money and have your own pace, then be a freelancer. If you want someone else to do the decision for you and if you're alright to be in a strict schedule then work for a company, It's more secure with benefits.

Its great working for yourself, but the isolation can be a killer. Especially if you're working solo from home. Not many people raise this issue, but it's definitely worth mentioning.

All good points were already mentioned.
I just would like to add this infographic on the salaries of designers (and developers) around the world: http://biz30.timedoctor.com/salaries...w-infographic/
It might give you another perspective especially on the financial side.

LOL. thought about this after seeing the stats too. But, the cost of living seems to have played a big factor for that.

That probably explains why developers and designers are paid that much too.
